Uncial script is is a transitional letter style. It was commonly used by Latin scribes in the early middle ages. The Roman hand that you see in everyday print (newspapers, books, etc.) was originally all capital letters. The Uncial hand has only capitals (majuscule) and no lower case (miniscule) letters. You can see some of the evolving miniscule letter styles in the Uncial “a, d, e, g, h, m”, etc. letters, however. Over time lower case Roman letters evolved. Uncial letters are based on the circle versus the straight lines of the Roman letter. Uncials are all the same height with exceptions of the ascending strokes of the d, h, k and l and the descending strokes of the f, g, j, p, q and y.Ronde or French Roundhand script is characterized by vertical letters and variations of thick and thin strokes. This letter style is based on the circle. Each lower case letter is preceded by a ligature that gives the appearance of joining the letters. Variations of Roundhand were popular in colonial America. |
